Kildwick Hall –
above and below stairs
Above stairs with the
Brigg family
From before the start of the 20
th
century until 1945,
Kildwick Hall was occupied by the Brigg family, who
leased it from the Wilson family of Eshton Hall.

When WA Brigg, who was mayor of Keighley,
held a garden-party in June 1914, over 700
people came to Kildwick Hall; including the
great-and-good from around the county.

Below stairs – with the servants
From around 1911 to 1920 Beatrice Billany and, for a
while at least, her sister Gladys, were in service at
Kildwick Hall.
Many of the photographs used in the rest of this
slideshow have been contributed to the Farnhill and
Kildwick Local History Group archive by Janet Hodgson,
Beatrice Billany’s grand-daughter.
On a postcard dated 29 May 1915, which shows a view
of Parson’s Bridge, Gladys gives her early impressions of
life at Kildwick Hall:
Dear Mrs Mason
Am sending a view part of the “small” hill we have to climb to go to Post Office.
I’ve been down today to get a little stock of stamps as I’m not fond of climbing.
Remember me to Leslie & Mr Mason. I’m getting on famous but oh it is quiet. The
housekeeper wants me to read to them all, (I don’t think)
